Oral history interview with Nathan Donsky, 1982 September 11.

Interview with Nathan Donsky concerning his experiences as founder and owner of Nathan's Jewelers in San Angelo, Texas and co-owner of Sterling Jewelers in Dallas and Houston, Texas. Donsky discusses his family background, the fire at Gardner Park in Dallas, his employment as secretary for Dallas lawyer Alvin M. Owsley, the establishment of Ray Don concessions in San Angelo in 1928, and his employment in dry goods stores in Forsan, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico in 1930. He also talks about being the co-owner of a pawn shop in San Angelo, opening Nathan's Jewelers in 1938, the profit margin, the opening of stores in Brownwood, Big Spring, Odessa, Paris, and Denison in the 1940s, and his involvement with 4-H, FFA, and area sports teams. Donsky comments on scholarship funding and athletic scoreboard donations, the operation of the branch stores, the founding of Sterling Jewelers in 1948, Nathan's Jewelers promotional activities, the expansion of the San Angelo store, the credit business, the Depression, as well as personnel, market share in Texas, the expansion of Sterling Jewelers, personnel practices, his civic and trade association activities, and the factors in developing a successful business.
